back in Japan

breads of Japan

Traveled back to Japan for the first time since the Memorial Day weekend. The flight was unusually smooth, my baggage came out before I got to the carousel at Narita (as usual! – damn, the baggage handlers are quick here – hey, do you hear me, DTW???) and the bus got down to downtown Tokyo pretty quickly despite the perpetual traffic jams.

On Sunday I walked around the neighborhood where I stayed, and to my pleasure found a bakery. I bought the buns you see above: a bun filled with curry paste, a Japanese interpretation of pigs-in-blankets (complete with a topping of finely crushed dried seaweed), and a bun covered in sugar and soybean flour (kinako).

Not exactly baguettes, sourdough, or challah, but good nonetheless.
